The U.S. seems to be in the middle of a slow motion revolution. We have often been told that the way one goes broke is gradually, then all at once. That seems to be what is happening to us. As a country we have been going morally bankrupt gradually, but now our moral bankruptcy is happening all at once. That has bad consequences for ordinary people.
In such a revolutionary time, where can we turn? Who can we trust? We need to have solid rock to stand on, but solid rock is not necessarily easy to find. Let’s try to examine institutions or events or people on whom we might depend. I will try to face the truth squarely. Better to accept a painful truth than to believe in a bright, shining lie.
1/The civil authorities, local and national. No, there is no help there. They are the people who refuse to protect our lives and property. Of course all civil authority has not yet broken down, thank heaven. But where the fascists/communists attack, the civil authorities bail out. We dare not trust them.
2/The U.S. military. They willingly involve us in crazy wars. Just to name a few: the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq. Sadly, Christians and conservatives have made an idol of the U.S. military for many decades. These careless military people are going to help us preserve freedom? No, they are just going to cause us to kill foreigners and ourselves, and cripple the same. No help there.
3/Democrats. They are leading the attack on Christian civilization. Good for them. At least they believe something, which is that Christian civilization and principles of freedom and responsibility must be destroyed. But that is not going to help us ordinary people. They are the party of Satan.
4/Republicans. Christians and conservatives have been pretending that the forces of darkness can be held back, if we just get enough people to vote Republican rather than Democrat. Where is the slightest hint that this is true? Where and when do the Republicans really stand on principle and speak the truth? When do they take a stand and refuse to back down from it? When have they insisted on a balanced budget, or showed themselves determined to keep us out of ridiculous wars? No, on the national level they are Satan’s little helpers.
5/The free press. Time after time we have seen that the Mainstream Media does not seek the truth. They want to manipulate us. They hide inconvenient facts. They support the fascist/communist revolution. Fox News? They are perhaps slightly better on a few issues, but most of them are warmongers. Taken as a whole, Mainstream Media is one of the leading enemies of civilization.
6/Private businesses. No, I love the free market and want to see it continue and expand, but people who should be defenders of civilization are almost entirely left-leaning in their attitudes.
7/The Internet. Well, Google, YouTube, Facebook and so on are almost completely under the control of leftists who cheerfully deplatform anybody who does not conform to the fascist/communist narrative. They don’t believe in free speech for those with whom they disagree. Happily, there are still places on the Internet where we can find truth, but it may become much harder as the weeks unfold.
8/Conservatives. Actually, mainstream conservatism, sometimes called Conservatism, Inc., is one of the most despicable groups of people in the country. At the drop of a hat, they sell out to the left, emotionally and intellectually. They want to have successful careers. That is what they care about. They won’t speak the truth. Of course there are admirable exceptions here and there, including the paleoconservatives (not members of Conservatism, Inc.) But taken as a whole the conservatives are a wretched bunch, not to be trusted.
9/Public schools. If we want to assure the destruction of Christian civilization, all we Christians and conservatives need to do is to keep on pretending that public education is a good thing. Public education is communistic in principle. Why would we expect that forcing our neighbors to pay for our children to be educated, and to pay for our huge salaries in public schools, would somehow lead to lots of people wanting to defend freedom and responsibility?
10/Christian schools. These are mostly baptized humanism. Are the young people coming out of them able to think and live as Christians? Just look around you. The answer becomes painfully clear. I love the fact that Christian schools exist, but we dare not depend on them to any large extent.
11/Colleges. The colleges are a stronghold for fascists/communists. They are teaching our young people to be idiots–and charging enormous fees as they do so. What a great gig!
12/The Rapture. Sorry, wrong number. It ain’t happening. God is not going to rapture us out of our responsibilities on earth. Would that He did! Sign me up! But He does not work that way. The dispensationalists are anti-biblical in their beliefs. Countless Christians have swallowed that wicked snake oil. We did it because it allowed us to pretend that we would be rescued out of a difficult life. We were lying to ourselves, and we continue to lie to ourselves.
13/The Bible-believing church. Surely we are finally getting down to an institution in which we can trust. No, the church is pietist/antinomian to the core. In fact, the Bible-believing church is 100% the cause of our national problems. The church gives us quarter-truths, half-truths, and full truths about which there is no controversy. It does not preach to us about our idolatry of the nation and the military, our warmongering and our acceptance of torture, our theft of our neighbor’s property (Social Security, Medicare, public education), and so on. I have said often in recent months that there are great reserves of goodness among Christians. I believe that. But much of our goodness is potential only. We have acquiesced in a brand of Christianity which is truncated and largely compromised. Unfortunately we cannot trust the church to be a solid rock on which to stand to fight against the fascist/communist thugs.
14/Our family and friends. No, we don’t even know how to love our family in a biblical manner, and they don’t know how to love us in a biblical manner. I will quote again the darkest words I have ever written, originally published on September 21, 2017: “We care quite a bit about other people. No, mostly all we care about is our families and ourselves. If we cared about other people, we would treat them more politely, we would get to know other people better and would involve ourselves in their lives, we would actively seek to help or encourage people. The news is even worse than that, however. For when I say we care about our families, even then we often care for them in a very foolish manner. We might think we love our children, but do we discipline them according to biblical principles, or do we make excuses for them and enable their sin? Often we enable their sin. So, in effect, we don’t even really care about our families all that much. Oh, we are on their side and want them to be successful, but only because they come from us. We don’t love them enough to teach them how to live in a manner pleasing to God.” Those words are dark but true.
15/Ourselves. Unfortunately, we cannot trust even ourselves. What are the odds that you and I have a firm grasp of how life should be lived? Look around you. Idiots to left of us, idiots to the right of us, volleyed and thundered (sorry, Alfred, Lord Tennyson). What are the odds that you and I are different from the idiots around us? Not high, if we are honest about the odds.
Are we completely doomed, then? No institution seem reliable. Our church, our family, our friends, ourselves, seem not to provide solid intellectual and moral rock for us to stand against the fascists/communists destroying our country. But I do offer one significant piece of hope. I think our only hope is to retreat, with our backs firmly against the wall, to number 16.
16/God and the Bible. We can trust only God and the Bible. Not the Bible as lazily interpreted by the church, but the Bible as it really speaks to us about every aspect of life. Jesus Christ told us that the Holy Spirit ‘”will guide you into all the truth.”‘ (John 16:13) Jesus Christ is solid rock (Matthew 7:21-27), and His Holy Spirit will guide us into all the truth. I think Jesus Christ is correct in what He says about what the Holy Spirit will do. Which is very good news, because truth is very powerful.
We hear truth constantly, from Christians and from non-Christians. Because our basic institutions are all horribly compromised, does not mean that there is nobody speaking the truth. We can’t trust our family, our friends, ourselves, or anybody, completely. But if something comports with truth, it is from God, whether spoken by a Christian or non-Christian. Don’t despair; we can recognize and appreciate truth, although it may not always be easy. “Trust, but verify.”
But we are going to have to be honest with ourselves. Our pietist, self-reverential brand of Christianity is not truth. We are going to have to listen to what the Bible tells us about our sin, and be willing to change. God’s truth is powerful for good, but it is also powerful to offend. If we stand for the truth, we may find that we are hated. We need to count the cost. God will, I think, support those who depend upon Him and who want to live as He requires. But His support does not mean we will necessarily have an easy life. He allows His martyrs to be killed, constantly.
Let’s be as honest as we can. Whether the revolution destroys the United States completely or not, is too early to tell. We could be in for decades of misery. On the dark side, there is no easy way forward. On the bright side, there is no easy way forward. Why is that bright? Because we have a chance to be Christian adults. What we do is going to matter. One person is going to matter. One family is going to matter.
The fascists/communists hate God, because God has given us a moral order which they consider too demanding. (They hate the rest of us only because they hate God first.) We have a chance to love God, because His moral order is true and because we know we need to accommodate ourselves to that good moral order. The fascists/communists are envious and violent and thieving and full of hatred. We have an opportunity to be generous-spirited and to defend the property and lives of others rather than to attack them.
No, finding some institution or group of people to trust, is not very easy right now. We can not even trust our families or ourselves. But if God is real, and if His Bible is true, we have solid ground.
If God does not exist? Well, I would rather stand with the non-existent God of the Bible, than with the fascist/communist thugs trying to end Christian civilization. Call it instinct on my part, or call it Neanderthal anti-intellectualism. I refuse to support the fascists/communists. May God confound them, if He exists. And if He doesn’t exist, may the universe confound them.
